Better Together Dementia Care
Training program for Long Term Care homes
For long-term care homes in Ontario, this training program is supported by the Ontario Centres for Learning, Research & Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI) and the PSW Education Fund.
The Better Together Dementia Care training program is designed to give you the practical, hands-on skills you need to provide effective, team-based care and support to individuals living with dementia in long-term care settings.
Created by award-winning memory care experts and healthcare professionals, this program builds on key principles from Gentle Persuasive Approaches and MINT Memory Clinic training. It’s specifically tailored to the unique challenges of dementia care in Long Term Care environments.
Throughout the program, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of dementia, its impact on individuals, and learn practical strategies for managing those challenges as part of a compassionate, collaborative care team.
Key aspects covered include:
Understanding Dementia: Learn about the different types of dementia, its causes, symptoms, and progression, as well as how it impacts cognitive, functional, and behavioral abilities.
Person-Centered Care: Train to focus on each individual’s unique needs, preferences, and background, promoting autonomy and dignity while assisting with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and eating.
Communication Techniques: Develop skills to communicate effectively with individuals who may struggle with expressing or understanding information, using clear language, non-verbal cues, and active listening.
Behavioral Management: Learn how to manage challenging behaviors, identify triggers, and use techniques like redirection and distraction, while understanding the role of medication when necessary.
Safety and Risk Management: Gain skills in ensuring the safety of individuals with dementia, including fall prevention and safe medication practices.
Support for Families: Learn to support families of those with dementia, helping them navigate challenges and providing resources.
Effective Team Management: Understand the importance of teamwork and accountability, working collaboratively with PSWs and other staff to provide the best care.
